Prior to becoming an attorney, Patrick worked for six years at the Minnesota State Senate, including two years as the lead staff person for the Environment and Agriculture Budget Committee, two years as the lead staff person for the Environment and Natural Resources Policy Committee, and one year as a budget and policy advisor to the Senate Majority Leader.

Patrick is a certified volunteer monitor for the Minnesota Land Trust, and serves as a board member of the Red Wing Arts Association.
